Julia Powell the latest partner to achieve Higher Rights of Audience
Glaisyers the well-known city centre law firm with offices in Birmingham is pleased to announce that partner Julia Powell is the third member of the Glaisyers criminal department to obtain the prestigious title of solicitor with Higher Rights of Audience.
At the last count there were approximately 80,000 solicitors in England and Wales yet only 2000 have Higher Rights of Audience and of those only relatively few have Higher Rights in Criminal matters. In fact there are only about 15 in the West Midlands and Glaisyers have 3 or 20% of the total.
All solicitors have full rights of audience in: tribunals, coroners’ courts, magistrates’ courts, county courts and the European courts. However those with Higher Rights can also represent their clients personally in: The Crown Court, The High Court, The Court of Appeal and The House of Lords.
Appearing in trials in these Higher Courts used to be reserved to barristers. However this rule changed and now solicitors can apply for the right to appear as advocates in the Crown Court and in the other Higher Courts, providing they can demonstrate sufficient competence and experience.
The 3 members of the new Glaisyers Higher Rights of Audience team are: Neil Davis, Steve Masih and the latest addition Julia Powell For more information contact: advice@glaisyers.co.uk or any of the partners. |
